Training and Leadership Programme On Board Star Cruise Libra , Penang

On the 13th of April , Leo Club of SMK Damansara Jaya have organized a project called Training and Leadership Programme On Board Star Cruise Libra , Penang. At 7.00am, all the participants have arrived in the school canteen. A total of 22 members had attended this project. After a short briefing by our teacher advisor, Puan Ng Yoke Chan, our Leo advisor , Lion Clarence Koh and our organizing chairperson and assistant organizing chairperson Leo Foo Sher Ming and Leo Solomon Tneo, we departed from SMK Damansara Jaya at 9.00am.

Along the way, all the members introduced themselves one by one. At about 12.00pm, we dropped by a rest station to have our lunch. After we had our lunch, we played a game called ‘Bus Criminal’ on the bus. This game aimed to let the members to learn how to solve a problem in a short period of time with the help of their partners. All of us had fun and the members find it interesting and exciting to play the game.

We arrived at the Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Yee Ran Jing Sheh at 2.00pm. The moment we reached there, we had our group photo with the home’s president. After handling our check, all of us went inside to know more about the home. The members enjoyed interacting with the disabled people. The members shook hands and even did a “gwiyomi” dance with one of the disabled. We departed from the home after one hour to continue our journey to Penang.

We arrived at the ferry port at 3.15pm. We took the ferry across over to Pulau Pinang to board our cruise ship ‘Star Cruise Libra’ at the Star Cruise Terminal located about 1.5km away from the port. It was tiring but it will be worth it. When we arrived at the terminal, Lion Clarence took our ICs to get our boarding tickets. Some of us rested in order to regain our energy after a long day in the bus and can’t wait to relax in our cabin rooms. Around 4.30pm we showed our tickets and boarded the ship.

We have already planned the room pairs the day before, so we got into our cabin rooms and memorize each member’s room location. We rested for about an hour. Some of us took a shower to freshen up ourselves before we went to dinner. The toilet is quite cramp and tight but it was bearable. Around 7, all of us made our way to the Four Season’s restaurant, which is a luxurious western buffet restaurant. The food was delicious, especially the roast turkey. This roast turkey is unlike any other roasted turkey we have ever tasted before because this turkey is tasty and moist at the same time, while the turkey we ate before is dry as a dessert. After dinner we explored the ship by going into some retail shops that were available on the ship, but the items sold were to expensive.

Around 8.15pm, the captain made an announcement over the PA saying there will be a safety drill in 15 minutes, and we were instructed to go back to our cabins and get our lifejackets. After hearing the main fire bell, we went to our designated safety zones. The crew made an excellent briefing on what we have to do when the real emergency occurs. We went to see our respective lifeboats outside the ship. The lifeboat, nicknamed Nassau could accommodate over 100 people and we are supposed to memorize the number of our lifeboat. Our lifeboat’s number is number 12, which is a pretty huge lifeboat. The cruise ship departed Penang afterwards and we were on the front of the ship so we can see it leaving the port. However it was dark so there wasn’t much to see. We made our way to the Stardust lounge after that to watch a magic performance.

The magician, Darcy Oake, made a breathtaking and spectacular performance. One of our Leo, Leo Selina Jia, had her iPhone stomped to the ground only to be found later back in a iPhone case, perfectly sealed in its original packaging. We were astounded how funny it was. After the show, we went outside to take pictures with Darcy Oake and we gathered all the Leos to begin our game “Running Leo” which is a spin-off of the famous Korean game show “Running Man”.

Running Leo is about to train the participants interactions with strangers and also among each other. To win this game, the participants have to find the mysterious killer among them. The clues can be obtained from the staff on the cruise ship. In order to make things more challenging, one of the participant legs has to be tied to their partner, this will allow them to walk systematically and also to train their working together spirit. Leo Heng Wei Lynn won the game.

After all the games, around 11.45pm, some of us decided to enjoy the swimming pool while the rest went to the karaoke bar. All the festivities ended around 2 in the morning, because all the shops are closed then. We went to bed then. Some of the Leos decided not to sleep in the cabin but instead they slept on the Skydeck, which they enjoyed a lot because of the cooling sea breeze that was happening at the time.

The next day, we woke up around 8 am and most of us are really tired. We went to the Mariners Restaurant to have our breakfast. The breakfast consist of a wide range of food choices, all the way from Asian breakfast to the European breakfast. We enjoyed our cold cuts along with a nice cup of joe. Around 9.15am we went back to our rooms to pack our clothes and essentials because 10 o’clock in the official disembarking time. We got back our ICs and payed our expenses over at the Collection zone. We disembarked the ship around 10.15am and went on board our bus. We headed over to the famous Penang icon, the Kek Lok Si temple. The temple was huge. Some of us decided not to climb but some of us had the curiosity to find out how the view at the top looks like. So we went climbed to the top of the temple. It was a lot of steps to climb, something like Batu Caves, but not as many steps.

When we arrived at the top, we had to take a new thing they had at Kek Lok Si, which is a inclined lift, which basically is a life that goes at a inclined angle. The top of the temple had a huge statue and we took pictures of it. We also prayed to the gods for good fortune in our studies and life. When we went back down, we stopped by a Chinese restaurant to have our lunch, which is a vegetarian meal. They did a good job making the curry taste like meat, but it is not. After lunch we gathered around 2pm at the bus stop to head back to Petaling Jaya.  The bus journey was a long and tiring one, with most of us sound asleep throughout the journey. We stopped by at Tanjung Malim around 5.45pm to have our dinner and we had a good meal. We arrived back in school at 8.15pm with most our the Leo’s parents already waiting there to pick up their children.

On the 6 April 2013, Leo Club of SMK Damansara Jaya organized their 23rd International Understanding Day. This year, the theme was Wonderland, Let Your Fantasy Manifest. The organizing committee has chosen this theme because they realized that the people nowadays are too busy with their personnel problems that they don’t have a time to take a break. In order to give an opportunity to those people, we decided to come out with this theme, Wonderland, a place where they wish to go, to be free from stress and also to let their imagination comes to live. A total of RM 5100 was raised and the funds were donated to the Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Yee Ran Jing Sheh in Bukit Mertajam.

At 7.30am, all of the members arrived at the school hall. After a short briefing by the organizing chairperson, Leo Solomon Tneo, the members were divided into their own departments and they continued their work like decorations, arranging the foods for refreshment and many more. The performers arrived at the school hall at 9.00a.m.and had their final rehearsal and sound check in order to give out their best performance during the show. After the members had their lunch, they went into a special room to change and get ready for the event.

The audience arrived at the school hall at 12.00.pm A light refreshment was carried out in the school canteen. We received great compliments on the food and the service we prepared for the audience. Meanwhile, there was also a sale outside the school hall where they sell badges, drinks, snacks in order to raise fund. The pre show performance started at 12.30 pm, there were performance like our school’s very own cheer team, special guest Skyward and also a rhythmic gymnastic performance.

At 1.00pm, the show officially starts. The show started with a countdown video prepared by Leo Solomon Tneo. After the National Anthem, Leo Pledge, Roll Call, the show was then proceeded to the opening ceremony. Our guest of honor, Lion Christopher Yee, President of Lion Club of Petaling Jaya, Puan Toh, SMK Damansara Jaya’s Afternoon Session Principal and our Lion Advisor , Lion Clarence Koh, lighted the sparkles for the opening ceremony.

There were many performances that were prepared by the Leo Club of SMK Damansara Jaya. For example, the president, the vice president, the organizing chairperson themselves each prepared a performance to entertain the crowd. Out of 20 performances, 14 of them were prepared by the Leo Club of SMK Damansara Jaya. This shows that this event fulfilled one of their aim which is to give an opportunity to the members of Leo Club of SMK Damansara Jaya to show their talents.

At 4.00pm , the event ended with a entertaining performance prepared by one of club members and his friends. The audiences were very happy and had a lot of fun during our event. All of the members stayed back until 6.00pm to clean up the hall. Everyone was happy and satisfied with everything and there were no complains made. We are glad to have an opportunity to organize an event like this. We hope that an event as good as this will be held again next year.

Leo Tree Planting Project

Jointly Organized by:
Leo Club of Serdang, Leo Club of Assunta, Leo Club of SM Tanah Putih, Leo Club of SMK Subang Utama, Leo Club of SM Chong Hwa Tenom, Leo Club of SMK Kepong Baru & Leo Club of SMK DJ

Armed with weapons and heading into enem...wait no...let's start over!
Armed with manual gardening tools ( sounds way better now ) and the spirit of Leoism, 12 DJ Leos set out on their mission to plant a number of youthful trees along the Kayu Ara River just behind SMK Damansara Jaya.

With the determination of a Farmville player and the expertise of an amateur environnmentalist no doubt, they believe our small scale effort would contribute to a greater purpose of creating awareness among school students and the public who pass the compound daily. This project brought us great joy and satisfaction hence we would like to forward our appreciation to the chief coordinating Leo Club, Leo Club of Serdang and also the kind-hearted Mak Cik from Pasar Tani who gave us amazing discounts on the hearty plants on account of our humble cause of protecting the environment.

It wasn't easy taking this photo, there were mosquitoes everywhere!

As you can see, the Leo banner is hanging by a branch. No pun intended.

A bunch of kids planting their sapling/tree whatsoever.

Treant Protector, Nature's Prophet and Enchantress
will be happy about this.

WWF Pledge Drive-Lend You Voice to Nature Conservation

Organizing Chairperson: Leo Tee Ke Hui

The WWF Pledge Drive begins on 18th of March in the compounds of SMK Damansara Jaya where stacks of WWF Pledge forms which were arranged and packed according to the number of students in each class were distributed to all classes in Form 3, 4 and 5.

Leo Tee Ke Hui passed down instructions on how to conduct the pledge drive in class to the monitors of every class in hope that the students would be enlightened about the importance of filling out the WWF Pledge forms, that is, for each form which is completed and submitted before 23 March 2013, Digi Telecommunications Company will donate Rm1.00 to WWF Malaysia's conservation work.

Besides, this survey would provide data on Malaysian's recycling and energy consumptions habits, towards helping raise public environmental awareness. An announcement was made in the morning to illuminate all members of the school community on this project and the objectives as mentioned.

Members of SMK Damansara Jaya were enthusiastic to lend their voice to nature conservation thus each class demonstrated keenness to serve their part in contributing to WWF Malaysia financially through the completion of the pledge form. Photos of the students taking part in the project were taken early in the morning as we did not want to disrupt schooling sessions.

At the end of the day, SMK Damansara Jaya managed to contribute towards the cause of environmental protection by submitting a total of 1013 pledge forms filled out by both students and teachers, equivalent to contributing RM 1013 to the institution, The forms were counted and returned by the responsible monitors of all classes without a single missing form. Following that, the Leo Club members began to recount and arrange the pledge forms in stacks of 100. They also discarded a small number of invalid forms that were submitted.

Fortune Frenzy

Organizing Chairperson: Leo Foo Sher Ming

On the 11th to the 15th of February, we started of the project with the Form 1 to the Form 5 students during their recess. When the students first came down from their respective classes, they were wondering what a giant wheel with all of the Chinese Zodiacs on it was doing in right in the middle of the school canteen gazebo. We started to explain to them the rules on how to play the game.

After a brief explanation, the students took out their Rm1 and placed into a box we made under the gianjt wheel before spinning. Some of them were lucky and managed to get their own zodiacs or landed on the 'Snake'. Those who got their own zodiacs received a free Fortune Telling service by Leo Tee Ke Hui & Leo Solomon Tneo, who used numerology to read their fortune. Those who landed on the snake zodiac got their names entered into a lucky draw and stood a chance to win two free IU day tickets.

Some of them were also unlucky and did not win anything, but instead of leaving them empty handed, we gave them mandarin oranges as a consolation gift. The project carried on for five days in a row. However, we noticed the project was very unpopular among the Form 4 and 5's, since only one or two who actually test their luck.

We decided to give the LEO volunteers who helped during the project a day off on Thrusday. We continued again with the Form 1 and 2s in the afternoon session on the same day. After school on Friday out fortune tellers had to go back to their home town early, we brought forward the project to 1 to 2 in the afternoon, just before the afternoon session students had to go to the hall for their daily assembly.

Yeap, that's the wheel of fortune.

Chinese New Year ( Short Film )

Organizing Chairperson: Leo Nurul Syafinas

On the 9th of February, Leo Syafinas and the actors of the short film, Tan Mei Ping and Michelle Tan headed over to the One Utama Shopping Mall to shoot a Chinese New Year short film that was earlier written by Jessica Chong. The short film revolved around a 15-years old girl who is going shopping with her Aunt Mei before Chinese New Year.

They are seen to be walking around the shopping mall, picking out clothes, watching a lion dance, a traditional yo-yo performance and also went to shop for toys for the little ones back home.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!
At the end of the short film, it is revealed that the girl is actually an orphan and that in a couple of weeks, Aunt Mei will be her legal guardian.

The video was edited and then posted through the LEOSMKDJ youtube account on 25th of February.

Bilik Kokrukulum 2 Clean Up

Organizing Chairperson: Leo Ng Jia Shiuan & Leo Solomon Tneo

On the 31st of January, we congregated at the classroom, 3 Cengal where club meeting takes place as sson as the meeting has begun. After reciting the pledge, we moved to the outside of the Bilik Kokurikulum 2 to get ready to clean up the room which is really dusty as it is very seldom used.

The members were split into 4 groups, each group was assigned to do their respective jobs. We then started by moving the tables and chairs out of the classroom so it will be easier for us to sweep the floor. Later, one of the groups proceeded to sweep the floor while another group use cloths to wipe the tables and chairs and cleared out the rubbish under the desks.

One of the groups also put up manila cards on the notice board and cleaned the whiteboard. The forth group cleaned the windows. After approximately an hour, we've finally done cleaning the room. We then moved the cleaned tables and chairs back into the class and arranged them orderly.

Everyone had a lot of fun and they hope a small but meaningful event will be organized again.

As you can see, tables can fly.

Yea, wipe that window!
