A 3 day 2 night camp organized by the LEO club of Petaling Jaya Integrity (Omega) involving
4 Alpha LEO clubs sponsored by the
Lions Clubs of Petaling
Jaya . During the camp, many games and activities
were held to not only foster the unity of the Leo clubs, but also teaching them
valuable lessons regarding the organization, mindset and attitude towards each
project.
Day 1
The five respective clubs, including
the Leo club of Petaling Jaya
Integrity, gathered at the A&W restaurant at 7.30 a.m. on 16th
of August 2013. We then left for the campsite situated at Putrajaya Wetland
about an hour later. Once there, we were told to set up our own tents to sleep
for the following nights. Then, the Alpha Leo
clubs were separated into groups, each consist of a balanced mixture of all
four clubs. After that, the Leo
members played several ice breaking games which instilled much cheer and
laughter to a fresh start of the agenda.
Among the groups were Blood Diamonds,
Black Clubs, Hearts Guru and Spadable. Later, it was the first workshop of the
camp. The storyline features a zombie apocalypse and the Leo
members as humans. In each group, the humans are divided into several roles
such as the scientist, the secretary, the scavenger, the multitask, the
builders, the coordinators and the puzzle solvers. As such, group members were
taught a valuable lesson, which was the role of communication in succeeding in
a project without prejudice against a person’s status in an organization. At 8.00
p.m., the groups were gathered once again for another activity. In this
session, there were 5 checkpoints with every challenge/game in each. It was
truly a test of intelligence as most of the games were knowledge based, though
in the end all went well and everyone enjoyed themselves. After 3 hours of hard
work, the Black Clubs went through all 5 stations the fastest among the others.
Day 2
At 6.30 a.m. the following day, a loud
horn roared through the tents as a morning call. The Leo
members were told to prepare themselves for a morning run. Despite the slight
drizzle, all went well as Leo members
jogged through the area with the guidance of the Omega Leos .
In the next agenda, Lion Ivan arrived and gave the Leos
and inspiring speech. He spoke about important things to take note of in being
a Leo , along with his past experiences
as a Lion member.
At 1.30 p.m., it was time for another
workshop. This time, the groups were asked to construct a vehicle out of
materials given. Each group presented their vehicles and raced along a track.
After three tries, the Hearts Guru’s vehicle traveled the furthest and won for
the round.
At approximately 4.30 p.m. in the
afternoon, we gathered in a wide field with our sport attires. After warming up
and stretching, we proceeded with physical-based activities such as Frisbee and
Capture The Flag. Despite the blazing hot sun, the members enjoyed themselves
as they played about in the open area.
At 8.00 p.m., everyone gathered around
the campfire. The night started off with performances prepared by each Alpha Leo club, including dances, singing and guitar
playing. After that, the members played games for the rest of the night,
exclaiming joy and cheer along the way. Marshmallows were roasted, supper was
served, and the night came to an end as the campers returned to their tents to
hit the sack.
Day 3
The morning horn was blown and at 6.30
a.m. to signify the last day of camp. The morning started with a miniature
Blind Leading the Blind game to the park. Once again, the participants were in
their groups and were blindfolded as they lead each other to the destination
according to the committee members’ instructions. Through this activity,
members learned to trust each other in managing a task in order to work
perfectly under all circumstances.
At 8.30 a.m., members returned to the
campsite and showered before breakfast was served. After that, each club
president (including the organizing Leo
club of Petaling
Jaya Integrity) presented their
yearly planner. Through the year planners, the Leo
clubs are well informed with the projects being carried out by the other
participating Leo clubs. This is
beneficial to every Leo club as
projects can be joined with each other to ensure a higher rate of success. Not
only that, they are able to learn from each other through the efficiency of
each project. Comments and constructive criticism were made, and soon after the
members had the last lunch together.
